Something has awakened in the Badlands. Undying hunger and hatred for Man seethe in the darkness. While below the brooding pinnacles, the first talking Western is being filmed.

The fledging director, John Ford, has inherited a troubled production and fights his own insecurity over filming his first movie with sound. Harry Carey, the star, and his wife worry about Ford's hostility to his former best friend. German screen sensation, Marlene Dietrich, has been abandoned by the director who lured her to American shores. Nicola Tesla, fabled genius, hides his true purpose in being the film's special effects man.

Then strange death begins to hunt the cast and crew down one by one. Abruptly, they find themselves cut off from outside help. And their only hope rests on the has-been cowboy acting as technical adviser... Samuel McCord... a man the Sioux fearfully call "the ghost who hunts."

When events seemingly cannot get any worse, they do. The not-human, estranged wife of McCord arrives and neither McCord nor the humans are safe from her. The only question is whether she will kill them before the awakened Something does.

I don't normally "do" westerns, but this author's voice intrigued me, so I gave it a shot---and I loved it. This wonderful story has plenty of action, but what really grabbed me were the philosophical insights woven into the narrative. I bookmarked far more pages in this novella than I normally do in a whole novel just because the phrasing was so lovely and the sentiment so wise that I want to go back to contemplate further. And yet...I can completely picture this this story on the big screen with viewers at the edge of their seats.

The characters are absolutely fantastic with color and personality and so much depth. I see this author has lots of other stories out, and I look forward to checking them out.

The narrator's voice seduces you instantly. Mr. Rossman should slow down so that the listener can savor his narration.

“Her Bones…” takes the reader to the early days of sound movies and radio broadcasting, to the filming location of a western, in the Badlands. The place is populated by famous people, from the glamorous Marlene Dietrich to the mysterious inventor Nikola Tesla, all captured in details that give them vivid life on the page. And there are other creatures there too, perhaps the stuff of nightmares…
Although the main characters –Sam McCord, Meilori, Elu- and their abilities (or curses) have been first introduced elsewhere, enough hints are given here to paint their portraits well while making the reader curious for more.
The story alternates heart-pounding action scenes with moments of reflection, all sprinkled with a dry humor, mostly of the self-ironical kind. For McCord is, in his own words, “a philosopher trying vainly to be a lawman.” I don’t know about “vainly”… I think he does a pretty good job.
The new (the radio station and Tesla’s inventions), the old (Apache knowledge and magic) and the very old (cosmic horror that brings to mind the Lovecraftian universe), in a setting that is also perfect for the subject, provide the right mixture of amazement and fear, making this short novel a highly recommended read.
It's about 'The Industry' in the early days of Hollywood and early western films. The Badlands are dry, barren, windblown rugged, and formerly the home of the Navajo and Lakota tribes, it's known as an unforgiving land. A movie on location sees it's usual expectations shelved when an evil that lurks unseen is called. . . the air is charged with apprehension, all the actors are spooked. Something isn't quite right, but the guy in charge, Durand / McCord, can't determine what. A body is found, attacked by something inhuman. Signs of an old enemy increase the stakes.

An excellent cast for the movie in the book Tom Mix, Marlene Dietrich, David Niven, Errol Flynn, and others, is balanced by the cast from the world of Sam McCord Meilori, Elu, Tesla, Wolfe and the Sheriff. Delighted to see his love, Meilori beside him and Elu's surprise appearance, McCord is ready to do what must be done - ever the Texas Ranger. The confrontation with the danger must be met by Sam alone. . . against the entity hiding in the cave. An entity with unknown capabilities. I'd recommend this book to readers who like old movie sets, western tales, or stories of heroes like Sam McCord. I liked it a lot, I enjoy the McCord stories.
An intriguing adventure into the emerging American Western movie industry, complete with descriptions of the major inventions, politics, and social changes of the early 1920's. The hero, technical advisor Samuel Durand, aka former Texas Ranger Samuel McCord, introduces the setting in the Badlands of Sonora, a desolate place that has attracted interest the burgeoning movie industry. Durand/McCord reminisces on how he bankrolled several successful icons of the time; Sammy Clemens little newspaper before he became the famous Mark Twain,,GW Griffith's controversial silent film, and eccentric inventer Nikola Tessla. The main characters depicted are author Yoemans' vision of the young stars Tom Mix, Harry Carey, Josef von Sterberg, and the glamorous Marlene Dietrich.

The author displays his historical knowledge throughout the story, describing events, inventions and personal traits in detail; providing public domain pictures for the reader to immerse into the era and build the atmosphere. As the story progresses, indescribable monsters of myth and imagination are introduced as Captain Sam's true identity and his connection to powerful otherworld entities is exposed. I was intrigued by the storyline with Elu, McCord's blood brother, also the son of The Turquoise Woman (aka Death), the development of the raptors Soyoko, and the use of mystical powers more ancient than The Great Mystery.

Given the movie making theme, I feel a reference to the movie FROM DUSK TIL DAWN is appropriate. In the movie starring Quinten Tarentino and George Clooney, the outlaw brothers kidnap a family to assist their escape to Mexico. The group successfully make it to the predetermined meeting point of the bar Dusk Til Dawn, but find it inhabited by demonic vampires. While BADLANDS has none of extreme gore and obscene language, the monsters are every bit as terrifying, and the movie cast and crew must rely on creative means to defeat the monsters within the motel to give McCord and his chosen sidekicks the chance to shut down the radio station signal - broadcasting a lamenting apology to Sam's estranged wife Meilori- that has awakened the Mother of all Monsters responsible for the ghastly murders.

Using his unique turn of phrase, an expertly drawn Byronic Hero, and a love interest doomed by more than species differences, HER BONES ARE IN THE BADLANDS is a great introduction to the mystical world created by urban fantasy novelist Roland Yoemans. Readers are sure to enjoy the philosophy, history, intrigue, and mystical creativity of this novel

One of the best books I have read in a long time. I enjoy reading free books and have found new writers this way. Most books are just so-so. This book has a good story line and good cast to it, was well written and I believe most readers would enjoy it also
